If you don't have the gear for that then I'd go for a lifesteal 1:1 tune with Skullcrusher, Sandlashed, Altan, Pythion and Frozen Banshee. That can be geared consistently even on an early game account from campaign and marketplace. Skullcrusher slowest and set up the timing on the block buffs and buff extensions right.

If you’re under altan is best. That’s only regarding the bonus def and not the buff def that they both bring. As you already mentionned, brago’s one is 3 turn vs 2 for altan so all things considered, I would say brago with 4k8- 5k def is better than altan even if he brings less bonus def through his passive.
